Non-Toxic Intaglio Printmaking

Feb 17,2018 - Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Non-Toxic Intaglio Printmaking Workshop  Saturday, February 17 | 10am-4pm
This demonstration primarily shows a non-toxic intaglio technique. By employing acrylic plates (or “plexiglass”) as a matrix, participants will utilize a material that is not only easily accessible but also inexpensive. To establish an image on the acrylic plate, a drypoint technique will be used. Acrylic plates can be scratched with just about any tool, including professional engraving tools to achieve fine detail. In terms of easy usability and simplicity, a hand-held rotary tool (such as a “Dremel”) or the small electric drills designed for nail art are recommended. The tools can be used to engrave not only delicate lines, but also rough textures in the image. Through these techniques, printmakers will be able to avoid commonly used toxic materials while simultaneously making use of cheaper and more easily accessible alternatives. Participants of all backgrounds and levels of experience are invited to join this workshop. Ages 15+ Cost: $100 (+ $2.50 Service Fee)/ $90 Members & Students (+ $2.50 Service Fee)

Page Meditations

Feb 28,2018 - Time: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Page Meditations Wednesday,February 28 | 6-9pm
In this workshop students will take discarded book pages and turn them into thoughtful, creative works of visual poetry. The process is quite meditative and simple! The instructor notes "This is work as play. You can’t do it “wrong” as there is no predetermined result. Any age level can do it – any person (self-defined creative or not) can do it." This workshop is great for people of all skill-levels.
Instructor: Debra Eck
A note on Page Meditations from the Instructor Deb Eck: Altering book pages has been around as an art practice for a very long time. Perhaps one of the most famous altered page books is A Humment created by Tom Phillips and it’s a long tradition still continued today by artists like Will Ashford. While my pages occasionally rise to being works of art, that’s not really why I make them. I started doing these pages as a way to transition between my Real Life and my studio. Most days before I start work in my studio I meditate on a single book page, just letting my eyes wander until some of the words emerge from the sea of text. For me these page mediations have become a tool to trick my inner censor – I am not really doing any work, not being creative, just hanging out with this old page from a book. Now after more than a decade of using this process it has become a core part of how I approach my studio work. In this workshop I will share my basic technique and talk about ways you can begin very simply to recycle and old book into a form of active meditation. This is work as play. You can’t do it “wrong” as there is no predetermined result. Any age level can do it – any person (self-defined creative or not) can do it. It requires only a few cheap materials and no experience or art training.   ______________________________________________ ABOUT OUR PAYMENT & REFUND POLICY: • Pre-payment is required for all workshops at WNYBAC. • Payment options: You can pay online, by phone, or by mail. Secret Belgian Bookbinding

Mar 24,2018 - Time: 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Secret Belgian Bookbinding Saturday, March 24 | 12-5pm
These hardcover books have a unique binding that allows them to be strong (like a case-bound book) but to also lay flat (like a coptic-bound book). They are durable and beautiful, albeit a little tricky to make. Once completed, it's difficult to see how they are constructed which adds to the "secret" part of their name. Don't be intimidated, however! Beginners are welcome in this step-by-step workshop!
A little bit more about the Secret Belgian Binding.... Anne Goy, a Belgian artist, invented this binding in 1986. She was interested in creating a binding that had a similar appearance to Japanese stab bindings but opened flat. She taught it to a few people who passed it on to other people and so on. Hedi Kyle, a world-renown bookmaker, learned of the binding while teaching in Ascona. Hedi brought the binding over to the USA and taught it to a number of people and it has become a sort of underground staple of modern bookbinding. Come learn to make your own Secret Belgian Binding book!!  Some bookbinding experience helpful but not required.
