To celebrate Summer of BookFest, we’re hosting free, family friendly demos in bookmaking, printmaking & more! Play along with materials from home, or visit our online Shop for demo artmaking kits.

Origami Books Oh My! Origami, the art of folding paper, is a useful technique for creating dynamic books. Learn how to create an origami dragon chain book using papers from home! What’s really cool about this chain link book is that you can make it however long you’d like…we’ve made books that stretch from one side of the room to another! Fill up your finished creation with drawings, comics, poetry, the possibiliities are endless.

In this tutorial, we’re using colorful papers & materials from our Origami Dragon Bookmaking Kit, available in our online Shop.

• Odd number of thinner square paper, we’re using five 6″ x 6″ papers
• Bonefolder, or another folding tool like a straightedge or your fingers!
• Glue stick
• Drawing utencils as desired, optional

• This project is suitable for ages 5+ with assistance. For very young bookmakers, consider modifications like larger square paper sizes.
• The specific origami fold we are using is called a Petal Fold! Petal folds are also used when creating origami flowers 🙂
• Sometimes, folks wonder how this is a book at all! It definitely looks more like a sculptural chain…BUT it can open & close like a normal “book”, and when it does the “book” has a front cover, back cover, and inside pages! When creating this origami book, consider the usual properties of a book (does a book always have content in it?), and challenge yourself to think outside of the box of what a book is and can be!
