Summer of BookFest: Letterpress Demo

July 11, 2020 - September 7, 2020

fFREE

To celebrate Summer of BookFest, we’re hosting free, family friendly demos in bookmaking, printmaking & more! Play along with materials from home, or visit our online Shop for demo artmaking kits.

Every year at BookFest we welcome curious folks of all ages into our printmaking studio to find out more about (and operate!) our antique printing presses. In this video, we show you how this year’s signature BookFest print was made, from setting type to handprinting on Mandy, our Vandercook 4 from the 1950s!

This “Takes all Types” print was created with the Book Arts mission in mind. We’re committed to sharing the world of book arts with makers of all backgrounds, ages & abilities…it takes all types to make the world go round, and it certainly takes all types in our letterpress studio. The print is set in a variety of antique wood and metal type from the Book Arts collection, and is available for purchase in our online Shop to support our virtual BookFest & our organization.

EXTRA TID BITS:
• In this video, we are printing with Mandy, our Vandercook Model 4, a printing press from the 1950s.
• This is a two-color letterpress print, which means it was printed in two layers. The first layer consists of a background of light blue wood grain texture (flipped over type!), decorative borders or “rule” (the horizontal lines), and metal ornaments in the shape of triangles. This was handset and printed first and allowed to dry for a day. Then, we printed the second dark blue layer!
