About the Artist – Mark Lavatelli
After earning an MFA at the University of New Mexico, Mark Lavatelli exhibited his work in New Mexico and Texas. He moved to Buffalo in 1988 where he is Professor of Art at Medaille College. Made mainly with the ancient medium of encaustic, Lavatelli exhibits paintings, prints, and installations that demonstrate a love of nature and concern for the environment. He also works non-objectively, referencing modernist abstractionists such as Richard Diebenkorn, whose early work he continues to study. He has participated in several prestigious artist residencies including the Vermont Studio Center and The Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM. Lavatelli is co-author of Diebenkorn in New Mexico and is a freelance art critic.
