Rock paper box – Debra Eck

This book form has many names – I personally love dragon fold – and I chose it to highlight the soft sheen and subtle clouds of this handmade paper. This Info-Islamic style paper was painted by hand using a variety of traditional dyestuffs and then burnished to s soft sheen using the stone you see in the image. I like how it looked with the book so much, I made a box so they can always be together!

Medium: book arts (handmade paper, book board, adhesive)

Size: 2.75″ x 2.75″ x 2″

About the Artist – Debra Eck

I’m a teaching artist who works with paper, thread and text. I l often end up making books! I love learning new processes and traditional techniques, I’m as much a learner as a teacher. If I’m not in my studio I’m probably in the woods or garden experimenting with materials I find there, or in a thrift store or at a landfill looking for things to recycle in my work.

When viewed cohesively, the rock, the paper, and the box all act in harmony. The cloud-like washes on all materials acts as the unifying factor between all pieces. The juxtaposition between the jagged dragon folded paper and the rock’s reflective smoothness emphasizes the relationship between both products. In the first image, the rock appears to be cascading out of the box and the paper resembling its tangible trail. Rock Paper Box is a unique demonstration of uniting the natural and the hand-made.
