This journal was created as a thank you gift for local author Amy VanDerwater for her visit and presentation to students at Windom Elementary. I created the “birds feet” stitching pattern for the binding and all the other elements of the book were intended to celebrate Amy’s then new book, “Everyday Birds.”

About the Artist – Diane Bond
I have always been fascinated by the possibilities and versatility of paper and books as an art form. I find the bookmaking process exciting and one that offers countless options with materials, structures and content. I enjoy making functional books as well as one-of-a-kind bookworks. As an artist I struggle with coming up with an idea I feel is “good enough” or worthy. If I feel the idea is trite or cliche, I quickly abandon it. I overcame my fear of being cliche by using the old cliche “don’t judge a book”…well you know the rest. Overcoming my fear of the cliche helped me conquer it…or so I tell myself. Many of my artists’ book look traditional on the outside, but are unexpected on the inside. Another way I remove creative barriers for myself is by being part of Book Arts. Visiting the shop, taking a class, attending a show or event always feeds my creative spirit. I am so happy Book Arts keeps the books arts alive and well in Buffalo and Western New York.
