Toasting to Type at the 5th Liquor & Letterpress Fundraiser

The swanky sounds of live jazz & faint smell of BBQ seeped through the fogged windows on the corner of Washington & Mohawk this past Saturday evening, November 16, 2019, as members of the community gathered to warm their creative curiosities at the *SOLD OUT* 5th annual Liquor & Letterpress Fundraiser, Book Arts’ largest fundraiser.

The evening featured tastings & samplings from local distilleries, including Niagara Craft SpiritsHartman’s Distilling Co., and Buffalo Distilling Co., as well as coffee provided by Tipico Coffee, local honey on site from Common Roots Urban Farm, brews from our friends at Community Beer Works, and last but never least, a non-boozey treat for all those DD’s out there, kombucha by Snowy Owl Kombucha.

Paired with these tastings was the mouth watering eats provided by Fat Bob’s Smokehouse, including their famously award-winning BBQ & mac n’ cheese bar. And who can forget about dessert, Fairy Cakes Cupcakery & Bakeshop satisfied the sweet teeth in the house with their assortment of mini (in size, but NEVER in taste) cupcakes.

Excitement gathered around the wall o’ alcohol (yes, quite literally a wall filled with prized bottles of alcohol) and the basket raffle station, featuring gift items from more than 30 local businesses.

The spotlight of the evening shown brightest on the antique presses that showcase the education & preservation Book Arts represents. The lower-level studio was a creative hub filled with “oohs” and “ahhs” as attendees tried their hands at six demonstrations on antique letterpresses, cranking each lever & roller to reveal uniquely handprinted ephemera, such as coasters, greeting cards, posters & more.

All proceeds from this event benefit our community arts education programming, like Printing Partners, bringing free workshops & accessible arts education to all ages in WNY neighborhoods. It is with the help of our community of members, event-goers & supporters that we are able to sustain our mission to promote a greater understanding of printing and book-related arts through education, creation, and exhibition for a broad and diverse community.

Didn’t make it to the event or simply want to continue the support? Please consider giving a gift to kick off our annual giving season. From all of us here at Book Arts, we say “Thank You!” <3
