Paper from Plants with Embedding Date/Time: Saturday, April 26 / 12-5pm Instructor: Kasia Keeley Using Western-style sheet formation, participants will make handmade paper from less common plant fibers. Pulp for the paper will be made from Cattail and Iris plants harvested and processed prior to the workshop. Each of these plants creates a unique and earthy paper far different from traditional cotton. No previous experience is necessary. Protective enclosures, including slipcases and Solander (clamshell) boxes, are a fundamental part of the bookbinder’s craft. This workshop will introduce the basic techniques for building, covering, and decorating boxes. We will produce a Solander box similar to the one illustrated here, and will review structure and design options that should allow participants to produce a wide variety of useful boxes – and not just for protecting books.
